Three men have appeared in court in South Africa accused of torturing and shooting a British woman, Sue Howarth, who was killed on her remote farm last week. Mrs Howarth, 64, and her husband Robert Lynn, 66, were attacked in the middle of the night. They were tortured with a blowtorch and then both were shot. She was killed and Mr Lynn was left for dead.
It has also emerged Themba William Yika, Nkosinathi Yika and Lucas Makua were out on bail at the time for another robbery.
The Middelburg Observer newspaper reported the trio were found with a camera, a bank card and several mobile phones owned by Mrs Howarth.
About 150 friends and supporters of Mrs Howarth and her husband turned up outside with the court with placards calling for a stop to farm attacks.
The couple were asleep in bed on their farm in Dullstroom in South Africa's Mpumalanga province, when three men broke in through a window at 2am and tied them up. The attackers refused to believe the couple did not have a safe and tortured them with a blowtorch.
Three men bundled the couple into their own pick-up truck, with plastic bags over their heads and tape around their necks during the horrific ordeal.
They were driven off before Mrs Howarth was shot twice in the head and her husband once in the neck, before the thugs dumped the couple by the roadside. She had a plastic bag jammed down her throat and he had a bag tied round his neck but he survived to tell detectives what had happened.
Police said the horrific ordeal lasted several hours. The three suspects were arrested over the weekend.
