2 grandmothers have been arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
According to NAN, the women were on their way to the U.S and Saudi Arabia but were apprehended after NDLEA operatives found that they allegedly ingested 108 wraps of substances that tested positive for heroin and cocaine.
In his statement to the press on Saturday, the NDLEA spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the women have been identified as Ebunoluwa Adebayo, 60, and Ayisat Amodu, 59.
Ebunoluwa, who was on her way to New York, allegedly ingested 83 wraps of heroin weighing 1.105kg while Ayisat, who was headed to Saudi Arabia, allegedly swallowed 25 wraps of cocaine weighing 275 grammes.

“Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy was arrested while boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight to New York while Amodu Ayisat Grace was caught trying to board an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Medina, Saudi Arabia,”During interrogation, both mothers blamed the crime on poverty.
“I am a divorcee selling provision for survival. Things became rough and tough for me when I lost my capital due to family problems,” Ebunoluwa said.While Ayisat, who could have faced execution if apprehended in Medina, Saudi Arabia, added;
”I was happy when they offered to sponsor my trip to Saudi Arabia but I never knew it will end in my detention.”
Both women are currently being investigated and will face prosecution.
“This move by drug cartels to recruit grandmothers as mules is very disturbing, shocking and shameful,” said NDLEA Chairman, retired Col. Muhammad Abdallah. ”The moral emptiness exhibited by the suspects must be condemned by all.
A situation where grandmothers have become a bad influence on their children and grandchildren is highly regrettable,” he finished.
