The police command in Katsina State on Thursday said it had arrested a gang of notorious armed robbers and kidnappers on Jikamshi-Yashi road in Musawa Local Government Area of the state, NAN reports.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP, Usman Abdullahi, made this known at a news conference in Katsina.
Mr. Abdullahi said three suspects were arrested on June 18 when the police went on a rescue mission following a road accident in Musawa area.
The commissioner said a passenger bus was involved in an accident with an articulated vehicle, adding that a driver died, while many passengers were injured.
He added that the injured were rushed to Musawa Hospital after midnight for treatment “but the police became curious when one of the accident victims had gunshot wound.
“The situation made the police to conduct thorough investigation in the area.
“Our men went back to nearby village and asked villagers if there was any case of armed robbery or something relating to that.
“And the villagers told the police that they heard a gunshot prior to the accident.
“During investigations, a vehicle with three occupants came to the scene of the accident but on sighting the police, the occupants attempted to escape but they were arrested.”
According to him, the suspects confessed to have been terrorising people in the area at gunpoint.
The commissioner said a laptop, 19 mobile phones, N350,000 and other foreign currencies were recovered from the suspects.
He added that further investigation revealed that one of mobile phones belonged to a House of Representative member.
Mr. Abdullahi said the House of Representative member told the police that he lost the phone about four months ago when he was kidnapped.
The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court soon.
