The police said on Tuesday that three men allegedly gang-raped a woman in an autorickshaw (Keke Marwa) near New Delhi after throwing her nine-month daughter off the tricycle to her death.
Gurgaon Police Chief, Sandeep Khirwar said the crime occurred in Delhi’s suburbs of Gurgaon when the 21-year old woman boarded an autorickshaw in which the three men were already sitting.
Khirwar said that the woman told the police that the men started harassing her as soon as she sat down.
Police added that the woman said when her baby daughter started crying, the men flung the child out of the vehicle.
Khirwar said that baby died due to her head injuries.
“The suspects sexually assaulted the woman in the autorickshaw as it moved on deserted roads in the area. It is a very heinous incident.
“We have formed a special investigative team and hope to arrest the three accused soon,” Khirwar told dpa.
The police initially registered a case of murder based on the woman’s complaint but it was only later, over the weekend, that she told the police that she was also raped.
“Medical tests were conducted that confirmed the sexual assault. We have added charges of gang-rape to the murder case,” the police officer added.
S*x crimes have been a focus of public attention in India since the gang-rape and murder of a student in New Delhi in 2012.
In spite of enactment of tougher laws, the attacks on women have continued unabated.
