Martin Pistorius, from South Africa, when he was 12 came home with a sore throat, which turned out to be a prelude to a 12-year health crisis.
His condition, both, physical and mental, deteriorated quickly until he couldn’t walk or speak.
Doctors said that it has to be cryptococcal meningitis causing this condition, but they weren’t able to diagnose his illness precisely
Martin’s mind started to ‘wake up’ after two years (when he was around 14 or 15 years old) and he was aware of everything around him but nobody knew that because he wasn’t able to speak.
He felt trapped in his own body and stayed in vegetative state for 12 years.
However, people lose hope when a close person remains brain dead or on life support for such a long time and even question if the person suffering would be better off letting go.
That’s exactly what happened. Martin overheard his mother say she wished he was dead, but knew she was heartbroken seeing her son lay there.
