Spanish Champions Barcelona have in the past invested in players that became huge successes at the Nou Camp, winning trophies and making huge returns for the club.
However, the Catalan giants have made mistakes in the past following poor and questionable transfer decisions made.
Here are the nine transfers made by Barcelona that did not yield profit for the club.
9. Andriano Correia (€9.5million to €600,000 = €8.9 million loss): The recent sale of Andriano to Besiktas was for a mere fraction of what the Baulgrana purchased his services from Sevilla. Barcelona were forced to retain his services due to the enforced ban on new players by FIFA in 2014.
8. Dmytro Chygrynskiy (€25million to €15million = €10million loss):Following a commanding performance for Shakhtar Donetsk, Barcelona snapped up the Ukrainian but the star-studded Catalan side made the player move on loan throughout his five years at Nou Camp.
7. Martin Caceras (€16.5million to €3million = €13million loss): The Uruguayan was a one season wonder after arriving from Villarreal in 2008 but could not cement a starting place at the club and had brief spells with Juventus before finally settling at Sevilla.
6. Keirrison (€14million to free = €14 million loss): Bringing a player to the Nou Camp is one thing while making the first team is another, like Keirrison who was highly rated in the Brazilian league could not stamp make the starting XI. He was eventually loaned to Benfica and Fiorentina before heading back to Brazil.
5. Alexander Hleb (€15million to free = €15million loss): The Belarusian midfielder blossomed under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger and was signed by Pep Guardiola but the gifted Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets kept him permanently waiting on the bench. He was loaned to Germany and England later.
4. Henrique (€16.5million to free = € 16.5million loss): Another big money move for a player in the Brazilian league flopped without making him even making a senior appearance for the Baulgrana. Henrique had a stint with Bayer Leverkusen before heading back to Palmeiras in the 20012 summer for free.
3. Alex Song (€19 million to free = €19 million loss): Consistency did not make the Cameroonian flourish with Barcelona after signing from Arsenal in 2012. Song had his loan spells at West Ham before being allowed to join Russian side Rubin Kazan.
2. David Villa (€40million t0 €5.1million loss): Villa was signed to fill Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s void and he enjoyed success with Barcelona, winning the League and Cup double. However, Neymar’s arrival from Santos changed the fortunes for the veteran striker as he was sold cheaply to Atletico Madrid.
1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic: (€87million to €24million – €63million loss): He was Samuel Eto’o’s successor in the summer of 2009 but after a season, Zlatan failed to live up to the billing as he headed back to Milan after struggling at the Camp Nou.
