Her countrywomen may not have brought home a medal during the first women’s Rugby Sevens tournament, but for Marjorie Enya, the Deodoro Stadium manager, Monday night will still go down as one to remember.
As the crowds filtered out after Australia’s 24-17 victory over New Zealand, Enya walked onto the pitch with Brazilian Sevens player Isadora Cerullo, before bending down on one knee to produce an engagement ring.
Enya, a 28-year-old manager at the venue, grabbed a microphone and delivered an emotional speech before the couple embraced to applause.
“As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” Enya told BBC Sport.
“I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it,” she added, and insisted she had not been nervous about popping the question so publicly to her partner of two years.
Cerullo was part of the ninth-placed Brazilian squad at this year’s inaugural Olympic outing for sevens, enough to win a place onthe core World Series next season. The local side, only qualifying for the Games as hosts, excelled in their fixtures to defy their seeding as the 12th strongest entrants.
