There were farcical scenes at the Olympic synchronised diving final tonight after the pool turned a murky shade of green. Looking more like water from the Amazon than a regular pristine pool water, the diving continued regardless as the blue color slowly turned a dirty green.
The five-metre deep diving pool – which was a normal blue colour during the men’s event last night – appeared to slowly turn greener as the competition went on.
British Bronze medal winner Tom Daley noticed the change, tweeting: ‘Ermm… what happened?!’
Rio officials at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center have so far been unable to provide an explanation.
The water in the dive pool was a noticeably different colour than the water polo pool across the deck.
There’s much speculation as to what’s going on but so far, no definitive answer.
Several people have speculated that the change is due to algae in the water, perhaps because the pool is lacking in chlorine.
