A young girl has shocked people with her confession after she was found out to be dating her own cousin and living with him.
A young girl from Kiaithiga village in Embu County, Kenya, has been found out to be dating her cousin.
The two cousins caused a stir in their community after they were discovered to be secretly dating, and even eloped to live together for a week.
The 17-year-old girl dropped out of school and moved in with her first cousin who is 23-year-old.
According to SDE, villagers soon thronged the young man’s home to discourage the ‘couple’ since Embu culture frowns on and considers their union taboo, even though a Mombasa court recently ruled that it was not illegal for cousins of opposite s*x to get married.
The girl however claimed she was in the relationship to help his cousin quit smoking.
She also claimed she had been possessed by evil spirits that made her go back to the man.
She, however, said she wants to reform and resume school, and asked for pastors to pray for her and her cousin.
Apparently, the girl went missing from home for a week, only for the worried parents to learn she was in the neighbouring cousin’s house.
Robert Namu, the girl’s father, said the two have been in a relationship for the last six months and have refused to end it.
“We learnt that my daughter has been sneaking into her cousin’s house where they spend the night together. She dropped out in Form Three despite being a bright student. The boy’s family is unwilling to act and end the relationship as my brother has dismissed the issue,” he said.
“The incident has really shocked us. It has bred animosity between the two families,” said Jacob Njiru, the County Peace Initiative Community Policing Coordinator.
