A Belgian Paralympian who has signed euthanasia papers to end her life says she doesn't plan to die immediately after Rio but when her 'bad days outnumber the good.' Marieke Vervoort, 37, suffers from an incurable, degenerative spinal disease that has left her confined to a wheelchair.
She lives in almost constant pain, sometimes only sleeps for 10 minutes a night, and in 2008 signed euthanasia papers so she can decide when to end her own life.
But despite the condition she has become one of the world's leading Paralympians, winning medals at the London Paralympics in 2012 and on Saturday night she won silver in the T52 400 meters in Rio.
With the current Paralympics set to be her last, it had been reported that the wheelchair racer had intended to end her life when the Games are over next weekend.
But speaking after her medal win yesterday, she said:
'I think there is a great mistake about what the press told in Belgium. 'It is totally out of the question. When the day comes, when I have more bad days than good days - I have my euthanasia papers. But the time is not there yet.'
