Bassey Edet, a police sergeant, who was kidnapped by a group of gunmen in Degema town, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, has escaped from his captors.
According to Punch Metro, the policeman was reportedly returning home at the end of his night duty on Sunday at about 6.20am when he was whisked away by the gunmen.
It was gathered that his wife, who resides in the Rumuosi area of Obio/Akpor LGA, was in tears after the news of her husband’s abduction reached her.
A neighbour to the policeman, who identified himself Ikenna, said members of the police sergeant’s family were distraught about their breadwinners’ whereabouts.
“He (Edet) was kidnapped in Degema while he was returning home in the morning by a group of suspected kidnappers. We do not know how he managed to escape, but he was able to put a call across to his wife for her to get him some clothes in his hiding place.
“The wife and other neighbours were not happy when they learnt that Bassey was kidnapped. But we are happy he was able to escape,” Ikenna said.
Edet is currently hiding in an undisclosed area as of the time of filing the report, even as a source said that a team of policemen had been dispatched to meet him to avoid being taken hostage for a second time.
When contacted, the state Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, promising to speak on it later.
