Following the newly passed California law that allows terminally ill people to have medically-assisted suicide, Betsy Davis has become the first person to actually follow it through.
41-year-old artist, Betsy Davis was diagnosed with the Lou Gehrig’s disease also known as ALS, in 2013, and had watched the disease ravage her body for years.
Following the passing of a law in California that allowed terminally-ill individuals to have a medically-assisted suicide, the former artist decided to take charge of her life, choosing when and how she will die, instead of waiting for the disease to waste her.
Davis who became the first person in California to try out the new law, gathered her friends and family for one last ‘hoorah’ before setting off to the ‘great beyond’.

Sending off the invitations, she urged her invitees to adhere to her ‘rules’. Read what she wrote below: “Dear rebirth participants you’re all very brave for sending me off on my journey, there are no rules. Wear what you want, speak your mind, dance, hop, chant, sing, pray, but do not cry in front of me. Oh, OK one rule.
These circumstances are unlike any party you have attended before, requiring emotional stamina, centeredness and openness.” She held a 2-day party to have some fun and create some memories for her family and friends.
One of her friends Niels Alpert said “For me and everyone who was invited, it was very challenging to consider, but there was no question that we would be there for her.

What Betsy did gave her the most beautiful death that any person could ever wish for, by taking charge, she turned her departure into a work of art.” Her sister Kelly Davis who shared the story said: “Obviously it was hard for me. It’s still hard for me, the worst was needing to leave the room every now and then, because I would get choked up. But people got it.
They understood how much she was suffering and that she was fine with her decision. They respected that.
They knew she wanted it to be a joyous occasion.”
They knew she wanted it to be a joyous occasion.”
Davis was later taken to a hillside where she was given a combination of morphine, pentobarbital and chloral hydrate as prescribed by her doctor.
